This metal box became Dell Rapids’ first official post office in 1872. Albione Thorne served as the 1st postmaster for a whopping salary of $1.00 a month. He received the first mail delivery to town in a grain sack on Christmas Day, 1871 and celebrated by having the entire town population of 13 residents over for Christmas dinner.
This was the official flag for four years. On July 4, 1908, the U.S. flag grew to 46 stars to celebrate the addition to the Union of Oklahoma the previous year. Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) and William H. Taft (1909-1913) served as presidents under the 46-star flag.
